UNHCR donates non-food items to Monrovia Central Prison
Monrovia, 25 October, 2012– The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has donated a consignment of non-food items to inmates of the Monrovia Central Prison. These included 958 blankets, 300 kettles, 500 jerry cans, 300 plastic cups and 57 sanitary kits.
Presenting the items at the prison compound on 24 October, the UNHCR Representative, Mr. Cosmas Chanda, said “The UN refugee agency was founded on the principles of human rights. Today is UN Day when the world is reminded that human rights are values that should be upheld, and the need for world peace is promoted. We are mindful of the efforts of the Government of Liberia to uphold the rights of prisoners; and in support of this, UNHCR is providing these non-food items to the inmates.”
Taking delivery of the items, the Assistant Minister of Justice, Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Mr. Hilary Siakor-Sirleaf expressed profound gratitude to UNHCR for its humanitarian activities in Liberia and other parts of the world. “I am sincerely delighted at this gesture which is the dividend of cooperation. This donation is very timely,” he said.
At the time of the donation, there were 972 inmates in the prison, including 15 females.
“The special needs of women were taken into consideration by including sanitary kits among the donated items,” remarked Counsellor Wheatonia Y. Dixon Barnes, the Executive Director of the Liberia Refugee Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC) who witnessed the presentation and thanked UNHCR for the assistance.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the Monrovia Central Prison, UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), UNHCR and LRRRC.
